The basics? Keep light and dark fabrics separate.
Dark clothes — like jeans, hoodies, or black tees — can bleed dye in the wash, especially in warm water. To keep your whites bright and your colors bold, sort into three main piles:
- Lights: whites, pastels, grays
- Darks: blacks, navy, deep reds or purples
- Brights: neon or bold colors (these are the sneaky ones that bleed)
Pro tip: New clothing (especially dark jeans or red fabrics) should be washed solo the first few times!

Washing your towels and t-shirts together? That’s a recipe for lint-covered clothes and uneven drying.
Instead, sort your laundry into:
- Heavy fabrics: towels, jeans, blankets
